Daimler AG Chairman Dieter Zetsche today announced the launch of the company’s “Smart Ready to Drop” service. Smart Ready to Drop will make online shopping even easier by turning participating Smart vehicles into drop-off and pick-up points for companies such as delivery giant DHL. Daimler is also working with Amazon and other online retailers.
Speaking at the International Consumer Electronics Fair in Berlin, Dr. Zetsche said:
We are working intensively on the question of how cars can help make people’s lives easier. If the car receives parcels customers have more time to do things they really enjoy.
Starting in Stuttgart this fall, drivers whose vehicles contain the necessary hardware will be able to arrange for deliveries to (and pickups from) their vehicles. The service will enable customers not at home for deliveries to securely receive packages by turning the vehicle in their driveway or on the street into a personal locker. Having a predictable drop-off point that does not require attendance will result in quicker receipt of packages as well as fuel savings by avoiding second and third attempts.
Certain editions of Smart cars will soon come equipped from the factory with what the company calls the “Connectivity Box,” which will provide access to the vehicle’s trunk via single-use and time-limited codes.
