Figure 1a on the left shows that only 14% of 40 kWh BEVs and 38% of 100 kWh BEVs can be fully served with home and workplace charging, and that adding ubiquitous public charging substantially increases the number of vehicles whose needs are met. More and more retailers and parking facilities are installing Level 2 charging, and this report justifies the value of those chargers to drivers who do much of their driving around town and can charge during their various errands.

In the U.S., though, the subcompact never enjoyed significant sales or garnered much love. Burdened with a cramped interior, modest exterior, and range of only 62 miles, American sales have been downright abysmal.

Volvo Cars announced today that, starting in 2019, every model the company launches will have an electric motor. This is, without a doubt, a big step for a large and influential automaker with a global footprint, though today's announcement does not mean that every vehicle in the lineup will be fully electric, or that internal combustion engines are going away immediately. Rather, all new models will be equipped with some form of electrified drivetrain, whether it be 48-volt mild hybrid, plug-in, or fully-electric. Then, as the company's gasoline-only portion of the lineup is redesigned or retired, there will be no more purely gasoline-powered vehicles.
- [Hyundai’s Ioniq EV Delivers Ultra-Low Total Cost of Ownership With Novel Recharging Credit](https://evadvisors.com/hyundais-ioniq-ev-delivers-ultra-low-total-cost-of-ownership-with-novel-recharging-credit/): Recognizing that electric vehicle customers expect a charging plan with their new cars, Hyundai is now offering the “Ioniq Unlimited+” subscription program for the company's Ioniq Electric (currently available in California only). The subscription program is unique in the industry because it wraps into the lease payment a reimbursement for electricity, based on the number of miles driven, up to the first 50,000 miles. This "recharging credit" will be applied directly to the owners’ subsequent monthly payment. Unlike other automaker charging plans, which generally are limited to one charging service provider and do not include home charging, Hyundai's plan is completely agnostic as to where the driver plugs in.

The annual carbon emissions avoided from this weight loss is about equal to saving 28 million gallons of fuel, according to a statement issued by the company.

By running solely on electric power for approximately 30 miles of city driving, these vehicles will contribute to reducing local emissions. This effort complements Ford's plans to introduce 13 new global electrified vehicles in the next five years.
- [Bentley Announces Plug-In Hybrid Electric Option](https://evadvisors.com/bentley-announces-plug-in-hybrid-electric-option/): Luxury carmaker Bentley Motors has announced that every model in the company's lineup will have a plug-in option. The first model offering a plug-in hybrid electric drivetrain will be the Bentayga, starting with the 2018 model year. The Bentayga is a logical choice for the company because it already comes with a 48-volt "Dynamic Ride Control system." The electronic ride control system, which is powered from electric energy produced by the vehicle and not provided by a plug, improves ride comfort on bumpy surfaces and minimizes body roll on turns. With the company's new commitment to plug-in hybrid electric drivetrains, Bentleys will now be able to be driven solely on electric energy (at least for short distances) instead of a petroleum-based fuel.
- [Faraday Future Unveils All-Electric “FF 91” Supercar](https://evadvisors.com/faraday-future-unveils-all-electric-ff-91-supercar/): Faraday Future yesterday unveiled its first production vehicle, the all-electric "FF 91" (referred to as the "FF nine-one"). With 1050 horsepower produced by a 783 kW motor, this pre-production supercar accelerates from 0 to 60 in an eye-popping 2.39 seconds. More important to most drivers, though, is that the FF 91 carries a massive 130 kWh battery. With more electric energy storage capacity than any other vehicle, Faraday states that the FF 91 achieves an EPA-estimated range of 378 miles.

The goal is the quick build-up of a sizable number of stations, which the automakers consider to be essential to broadening the appeal of fully-electric vehicles by mitigating drivers' concern of running out of electricity or not being able to easily reach a distant destination without a protracted stop for charging. This concern, referred to as "range anxiety," is the single biggest impediment to drivers purchasing EVs.
- [Jaguar Joins the EV Race](https://evadvisors.com/jaguar-joins-the-ev-race/): Nearly a year ago, Jaguar Land Rover registered the term "I-Pace" with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. This set off speculation of the United Kingdom-based luxury automaker's plans for an electric vehicle, and now we know the answer. By 2020, according to the company's CEO, Ralf Speth, up to half of Jaguar Land Rover's lineup will be hybrid, plug-in, or all-electric.

While fuel efficiency and clean air are important to many drivers, such attributes do not, on their own, generally translate into significant sales unless the vehicle is also attractive and fun to drive. For this reason, rather than focus on fuel or the environmental benefits of electric drive, Mini is emphasizing how much fun electric driving is due to features such as thrillingly powerful torque and a continuation (if not improvement) of Mini's spirit and aggressive handling.
